Greetings from Lucknow…
As we all know, India is the diabetes capital of the world. Diabetic foot disease is one of the major complications, with almost a third of the diabetics affected by this. Despite its high prevalence, awareness regarding the onset and management of diabetic foot is poor. Diabetic foot diseases causes significant morbidity for the patient, reducing mobility and accelerating the onset of other complications as well. Foot disease sets the patient down a slippery road, which if neglected finally leads to major amputations. The long term survival after major amputations is comparable to major cancers, yet this remains alarmingly understated.
Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSI) is one of the few bodies who is dedicated to reducing the burden of diabetic foot disease in the society. DFSI was founded on 30th March 2002 and since its inception has grown to more than a thousand members all over the country. It includes members from all the different specialties related to the management of diabetes, be it surgeons, physician, podiatrists, nurses and therapists. It aims to bring them all under one umbrella, to provide a common platform, with each bringing their own unique perspective, to tackle diabetic foot disease.
